In the past, the research of the members of The Department of Languages focused mainly on issues of general linguistics and the terminology of professional language. Course books and textbooks of professional Russian, German, English and French language as well as Slovak for foreign students were prepared at the Department.
Further study materials and language courses have been developed as part of many international and national projects, such as courses in the field of tourism and environment, electrical engineering and informatics, working environment and business communication, as well as courses for primary school teachers, PhD students and foreign students. Other projects focused on professional language and terminology, the European language portfolio and theoretical linguistics. The Department was involved in the national programmes VEGA, APVV and operational programmes Education and Research and development. From international grant schemes, it was Leonardo lifelong learning (coordinator projects TOURNEAU, EDORCO and ESPESIT; partnership projects Effective Writers and Communicators, IMLIT, EEE, VIC and AGROLAND), Socrates lingua (coordinator project PROQUA and partnership projects EuroIntegrELP, CALL @C&S and CMC), Transversal (projects E-Bridge and CMC-E), Erasmus (project EILC, individual mobility) and Grundtvig (project TAMSEF).
Since 2002, the department has regularly organized international scientific conferences. The first conference called “Deutsch mit allen Sinnen” (2002) concerned German language teaching. Further conferences covered all foreign languages taught at the Department. They were entitled: “Foreign Languages Communicatively – Effectively – Competently” (2004), “Live-Work-Study with Foreign Languages in Europe” (2006) and “Foreign Languages – Lifelong Challenge” (2008). Since 2009, the conference has been called “FORLANG – Foreign Languages in an Academic Environment” and was always held in an odd year (2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2017). Contributions are published in the peer-reviewed proceedings in electronic form. Non-conference proceedings FORLANG was exceptionally issued in 2012 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Department foundation.
